The Memorable Learning Experience (MLE) framework offers a thoughtful approach for creating impactful cultures and learning opportunities when they are exposed to exponential change.
Rather than simply presenting information, the MLE framework brings learning to life by engaging people's minds, emotions, and senses. This creates a deeper connection with the material that sticks over time. Some key aspects of the MLE approach:
Making learning experiential. Hands-on activities, simulations, and real-world practice opportunities reinforce the material and build critical capabilities. For example, when introducing a new digital system, we conduct workshops where employees get to test and experiment with the platform together in a safe environment.
Linking to emotions. Storytelling, music, art, and humor help concepts resonate at a personal, meaningful level. I once brought in an improv comedy group to lighten the mood during a stressful rollout. The laughter and camaraderie built bonds that carried over into the work.
Balancing challenge and capacity. Pushing people too far outside their comfort zone causes distress, while too little challenge breeds complacency. MLE aims for that sweet spot of 'good positive stress' that engages the mind. Managers provide support and resources to help teams stretch their abilities.
Building community. When people feel welcomed and valued by their peers, learning becomes a shared experience. We design sessions that promote relationships and trust between employees through small group collaborations and sharing personal stories.
Adding an element of surprise. Unexpected moments like guest speakers, prizes, or new environments capture attention and stimulate curiosity. At a recent offsite, we had a magician perform sleight-of-hand illusions related to the topic, which delighted the audience.
The MLE approach awakens the senses, emotions, and social connections of your people. When learning feels rewarding on multiple levels, the lessons last over time. Check more information about MLE (including the science behind it) in the Enterprise Agility Fundamentals book.
